How to Set Your Leisure and Recreational Goals

Posted by

To live a fully balanced and successful life it is extremely important to set goals in the area of leisure and recreation. Like the saying goes, “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. Having fun activities to participate in can help balance out our career, especially when we become overwhelmed or stressed out with our job responsibilities and aggravations.

Richard Leider
In his excellent book, “The Power of Purpose”, by Richard Leider, he explains the importance of using one’s values as a guide to living a balanced life. I highly recommend getting a copy of his book and reading it.

Personal Values
Your personal values are a good starting point for setting your leisure and recreational goals. These values are indicators of what types of activities you would enjoy doing in your leisure time. You can start by making a list of the activities that you get so involved in, that time just flies by. These are the activities where you find yourself pleasantly challenged, yet able to savor them when doing them.

Prioritize
Once you come up with a list, decide which ones you would like schedule into your week. Even if you are only able to set aside thirty minutes twice a week, this would be a great start. The important thing to remember is that by giving yourself a structure you are able to make time for doing these activities. Unless you are able to open up a part of your week for doing these recreational pursuits, you probably won’t get into the habit of doing them on a regular basis.

After a period of time of regularly engaging in these activities, you will begin to accrue some long term benefits. Some of these benefits include: reduced stress levels, a more positive attitude, better sleep patterns and something to look forward to on a regular basis.
