More Construction Jobs Cut for Year End 2010

We’re all well aware of how hard the construction industry has been hit over the past few years, but with the end of stimulus spending, construction in the United States shrunk further in most states between November and December of 2010, and brought construction spending to a ten-year low, making it difficult, to say the least, for job seekers in the construction industry.

Over the course of 2010, construction employment dropped in 36 states, and for the year end, continued to decline in 37 states plus the District of Columbia. While some jobs were added -- Delaware added approximately 300 jobs -- even the seasonally-adjusted employment statistics were rather dismal. The state of Nevada showed a substantial decrease in construction employment, with almost 11,000 becoming unemployed in the month of December.

As always, the construction industry is calling on the administration to announce new stimulus spending, as the current forecast for 2011 predicts an overall decrease in construction demand in all key market segments. Where it looked like non-residential construction may have been on the rise again, early information available in the new year doesn’t look nearly do optimistic.
